Program Description

The central focus of this conference is to increase the awareness of domestic violence and the effects of domestic violence on women and children through education, skill building and resource services.

Conference Objectives and skills to be gained

  • To change current domestic violence policy to enforce more severe penalties on offenders.
  • To provide tools for domestic violence providers to educate victims.
  • To bring providers, community leaders and experts together to exchange ideas, knowledge and resources in an effort to better serve the families affected by domestic violence.

Presenter Information

Keynote Speakers

Robert Stepan, former Kansas Attorney General - Honorary Conference Chairman

Olga Trujillo - Olga Trujillo is the Director of Programs at Casa de Esperanza in St. Paul, MN. Ms. Trujillo is an attorney who, after nearly thirteen years with the United States Department of Justice, started her own consulting practice, O.R.T. Solutions, Inc., to work on domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault issues. Trujillo is a nationally revered speaker and has worked with many national organizations on issues of violence against women and children. Ms. Trujillo will address the needs of women and children through effective public policy, legislation, and domestic violence programs.

Lynette Poolman - Lynette Poolman has a Bachelor of Science degree in Youth and Human Services and a Certification in American Humanics from the Arizona State University. She has also completed Certification through the University of Florida Carnegie Foundation's Starting Points initiative on Brain Development. Ms. Poolman is a National Trainer for the ACT Against Violence Program and has received a Presidential Commendation from the American Psychological Association for her dedication to violence prevention and young children.


Continuing Education Hours

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Academic Conferences is granting 7.5 contact hours (0.75 CEUs) for this event.  Approval for continuing education credit has been submitted to the following agencies.  You may also need to apply for individual approval of this course for credit toward your continuing education.  Hours awarded by these agencies vary.  See below.

Each attendee will receive a certificate of attendance from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln signifying our approved hours and CEUs.  Any required profession-specific continuing education approvals (approved hours and any approval numbers) will be listed on each attendance certificate.

Nurses

Kansas: The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (a conference sponsor) is approved as a provider of continuing nursing education by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. This course is approved for 8 contact hours applicable for RN, LPN, or LMHT relicensure.  Kansas State Board of Nursing Provider Number: SP1112-0910

Missouri: No continuing education hours are required by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.

Nebraska: The Nebraska Licensure Unit-State Board of Nursing accepts out-of-state continuing education events that have been approved by that state's licensing body.  The Kansas State Board of Nursing has approved this program for 8 hours of credit.

Iowa: The Iowa Board of Nursing accepts out-of-state continuing education events that have been approved by that state's licensing body.  The Kansas State Board of Nursing has approved this program for 8 hours of credit.

Social Workers & Counselors (Mental Health/Substance Abuse/etc):

Kansas: Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Psychologists, and Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors—keep your attendance certificate and a copy of the agenda for your records toward your continuing education requirements.
Social Workers—we have applied for pre-approval of this program through the Kansas State Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board.

Missouri: Licensed Professional Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists—keep your attendance certificate and a copy of the agenda for your records toward your continuing education requirements.
Social Workers—The Missouri Committee for Social Workers accepts all continuing education courses provided by an accredited college or university which pertain to the effective practice of social work.  The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is an accredited university providing this continuing education.

Nebraska: Alcohol and Drug Counselors—we have applied for pre-approval of this event with the Nebraska Public Health Licensure Unit.
Mental Health Practitioners (including Certified Marriage and Family Therapists; Certified Professional Counselors; Certified Master Social Workers; and Certified Social Workers)—this program meets the criteria of an approved continuing education program for mental health practice.

Iowa: Alcohol and Drug Counselors; Prevention Specialists; Assessment Specialists; Certified Gambling Treatment Counselors; Certified Criminal Justice Professionals; and Certified Co-occuring Disorders Professionals—we have applied for pre-approval of this event through the Iowa Board of Certification.
Marriage and Family Therapists; Mental Health Counselors; Psychologists; and Social Workers—this event is intended to be integrally related to the practice of your profession and to be eligible for your continuing education. The Iowa Dept of Public Health Professional Licensing Bureau handles continuing education approval.

General Registration is $30.00. The registration fee includes all materials and refreshment breaks.

When you register for the conference, you will be required to select your breakout sessions per time slot. Sessions will be listed by letter (A through E) and title for you to choose during the registration process. Please see the conference agenda for more detailed descriptions.

The Jack Reardon Center is located in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, next to the Hilton Garden Inn. A special government rate for sleeping rooms is available to those attending. To receive this rate, call the registration desk at (800) 445-8667 and mention that you are attending this conference. Attendees will be responsible for making their own accommodations and charges.


Receiving Donations-Cellular Phones

We urge you to bring and donate any spare cellular phones with accessories for distribution to agencies and use for emergency purposes by women in need. Please bring these to the event in a clear plastic bag. If you wish to receive a tax deduction, please include a piece of paper with your name, address and phone number to be sent a receipt.
